So what’s it about?
Imagine a future where you wrenched from your home, family and life because someone has labelled you a sinner. Now imagine that there is no way to prove your innocence. No way to convince them that you have been wrongly charged. No way to escape the label with which you are branded…
This is the world where Lexi lives. It is a place where one man rules all and you are either citizen or sinner. When Lexi is accused, hunted and physically branded with the blue tattoo of Lust her whole world turns upside down. She finds herself catapulted from one type of torment to another. However it is only here - in the Hole, where she is most vulnerable and at most risk, that she finally finds hope, friendship, love and the will to survive…
Love it or hate it?
This was one enjoyable read. From the first page to the last word I was hooked. Nothing could distract me from the page turner. I read it all in one sitting- and no it’s not a short read – but I couldn’t put it down not even when the birds came out to signal the new dawn approaching. It is well written, fast paced, action filled and beautifully characterised.
Lexi is a fabulous non-heroine. The cruelty of her life and her consequent internment in the hole, have you screaming out at the injustice this girl suffers. Yet with every beating she takes – metaphorical or otherwise – she becomes more determined. If this book solely revolved around Lexi’s experiences it would be a great story but then we have Cole. The relationship between this sinner and her guard is perhaps not unexpected but the beautiful and sweet moments they share are so endearing that it is hard not to sigh at them. Cole is a fabulous blend of fierce and fair. His dilemma is a difficult one and the constant threat that they are under gives their relationship an anxious tension which, right up until the end, leaves you questioning.
But if there is something that I absolutely ADORE about this book it was Zeus. Oh my gosh that dog is the funniest, silliest and most lovable dope I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. Some of my favourite quotes in the book are when Cole is reprimanding him for one thing or another. Even when the bullets are flying Zeus steals the scene!
If there is any book at the moment that has ‘Movie Material’ written all over it - then it is this one!
A highly recommended read.
Read this if…
“What was that?” I ask Zeus. It happens again but louder this time. Zeus runs into my room as a foul odor drifts by. “Was that a fart?” I laugh. “Oh my word, I can’t believe you’re afraid of your own fart.” I’m laughing so hard I snort. It’s a small reprieve from the violence and stress. I’m on the floor, doubled over, when Cole walks in with a towel wrapped around his hips. Everything else is bare, steaming flesh. And I pry my eyes away.
